(BIARC) Unfinished Business and antenna build project

Welcome to a “Hawaii Amateur/Ham Radio News” update from Big Island ARRL News.  Views expressed in this Amateur/Ham Radio News summary are those of the reporters and correspondents.  Content supplied by Mel (KH6EKD), who presented a digital workshop at the Saturday, 08 June 2019 meeting of the Big Island Amateur Radio Club.  He was unable to finish all of the topics he set out to explore, so he’s included some additional ideas you may find useful, particularly for those Hawaii radio amateurs planning to participate in the “Grid Madness 2019” VHF/UHF Simplex Contest on 15 September 2019.

Hi folks, Thanks to all who attended the BIARC meeting yesterday.  I volunteered to be a part of the digi demo because although I have the hardware to access  digital ham modes, I lack the knowledge and experience to use it effectively.  Pascal’s and William’s inputs helped boost my understanding of how all this magic works. I had just installed VARA on my computer during the meeting, so when we attempted to demo that mode, my laptop settings had not caught up with the new software, hence the glitches we encountered. Because of those delays, there were a few items on the agenda that did not get covered, so here they are:  1)  Jim WH6FQI had brought along his handheld and TNC-X to show how he links this to his laptop which enables him to do portable/mobile Winlink.      2)  For July’s BIARC meeting Jim will be showing his emergency power setup.  3)  Some of you saw the hand-held “tape measure” yagi antenna on the table up front.  This is a prototype of the antenna we’d like to offer at the August BIARC meeting.  We thought this would be fun for members to make for “Grid Madness” coming up on Sept. 15. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RHkrPbjRoN_opToWcNClhAQJ4U4bt5he/view If there’s enough interest the club will provide (at cost) all the parts needed, and assembly will take place during the meeting.  A description of the project is located here: http://theleggios.net/wb2hol/projects/rdf/tape_bm.htm At this point plans call for using PL-259 coax connectors, but you will have to get your own adapter to fit your specific radio. Please email me if you have an interest in building this antenna.  This is not a commitment, but we’d like a show of hands to project the cost and materials.  (Mel KH6EKD   glenmio@aol.com)  Well, that brings us up to date on all we wanted to cover yesterday.  Hope to see you at next month’s meeting.  Happy DXing.  MelKH6EKD

BIARC Antenna Build Project.

In a related topic, Tony Kitchen (WH6DVI) is asking Big Island Amateur Radio Club members if they’d be willing to underwrite a small antenna project that could be used for the “Grid Madness 2019” Contest on 15 September 2019.

I would very much like to do the tape measure build project. I  would also be interested in doing a simple j-pole design.  The club has $100 in the 2019 budget for this project. If we want to spend more than that  we could ask stations that build their own to pay the difference at cost between the budget and what was actually spent.

Does anyone have extra helpful materials they could donate to the antenna build projects? This way we could stay within budget. I believe that I may have a bunch of extra 1/2″ PVC.

FYI – Below is a link to J antenna variations information:
