Aloha,
Alan Maenchen (AD6E/KH6TU) is headed to Italy to participate in the
World Radio Teamsport Contest (WRTC) being held in Italy this year. The
WRTC is the “Olympics” of Amateur Radio contesting. Every four years,
teams of the best contesters from around the world travel to the country
hosting the games. Identical radio stations are provided to make the
event about operator skills. Even the callsigns used are standardized
and randomly assigned so no team has an advantage of short calls or good
phonetics.
Alan is one of the members of the two-man team representing the OC2
region.
A best guess as to when any of the WRTC stations will be open to Hawaii
is:
20 meters: 0200-0900Z short path, and 0300-0500Z long path
15 meters: 1800-2200Z and 0500-0800Z long path
10 meters: nothing short path but 0700-1100Z and 1900Z long path
The call list was announced Friday July 1st and the contest runs from
July 4th to 10th. Expect very weak signals. If you work him, neither he
nor the QSO station is allowed to say anything that would identify the
team. such as saying Aloha, or hi Joe!
Alan will be preparing some information about the event for his Hawaii
QSO Party website when he returns. Mark your calendar for the 2023 HQP
(August 25-27). HQP is a good event to get the contesting bug and
training. Maybe it will lead to your being selected for the WRTC down
the road in your ham career. The next WRTC will be in 2027.
