The SSB results of the 2022 CQ WPX Contest anchor our September issue. Participation was down a bit from the past couple of years as the “Covid bump” recedes and as a result of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ukrainian stations are off the air entirely, and CQ policy has limited the participation in our contests by stations from Russia and Belarus because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Editor W2VU discusses this in detail in his “Zero Bias” editorial and Contesting Editor N3QE looks at the broader impact of the war on contesting in general.

Those who did take part in the WPX SSB weekend found great conditions on the upper HF bands as solar cycle 25 continues to build.

The rest of the issue is much less controversial, with a bit of an historical bent. Our “CQ Classic” this month recalls a one-man DXpedition to Juan Fernandez Island in the 1980s, with a dose of the ham radio spirit included.

Next, AC7ZL applies modern computer power to his search for the original message behind the legendary Wouff Hong; and N1EA recalls the telegraph keys used by commercial operator on ships, aircraft and coast stations through most of the 20^th century.

Then, WA9PYH brings us back to the present with his project for protecting the popular and inexpensive, but very delicate NanoVNA. Finally, PT2ZDX interviews Brazilian RTTY contester Julio Tarraco, PY2XV.

Among our columns, WA2NDM has a build-it-yourself active antenna in “Math’s Notes” and “Ham Notebook” editor KH6WZ reviews the right way to attach common connectors to coaxial cable. “Listening Post” editor Gerry Dexter reports renewed activity from Brazil on 60 meters; Emergency Communications Editor K3PFW looks at family readiness for disasters; Kit-Building Editor K0NEB starts building the new QDX digital transceiver, and K8ZT looks at logging and logging programs in “Ham Radio Explorer.”

We’ve also got several VHF-focused columns this month. “Learning Curve” editor KO0Z offers an introduction to 6 meters, Digital Editor N2IRZ writes about making use of 219-220 MHz for high-speed packet links, and VHF-Plus Editor N4DTF reports on the 2022 Central States VHF Conference. Finally, DX Editor N2OO passes his keyboard to K4MZU to write about chasing contacts in, and awards from, Antarctica.
