Comment:

Joe has sent out an expanded list of Hawaii Amateur/Ham Radio activities for August 2018.  Among the topics are the Hawaii QSO Party and special presentations by Oscar Resto (KP4RF), the ARRL Section Manager for Puerto Rico.

The message includes the dates, places, and times that Mr. Resto will be discussing emergency communications and how radio amateurs helped restore communications in Puerto Rico following the passage of Hurricane Maria.

Here’s Joe’s complete message:

“Hi, Just a few quick notes about August activities.

The Hawaii QSO Party is 24 Aug 6pm to 26 Aug 6pm.  Stations can operate
as many or as few hours as they want during the 48-hour period.  Join in
and invite friends.  Get on the air and tell mainland hams about our
hurricanes and volcanos.  See http://HawaiiQSOParty.org for details.

Many of you have probably heard the ARRL Puerto Rico Section Manager ,
Oscar Resto (KP4RF) is visiting Hawaii this month.  He promises
interesting talks about the experience of living thru a catastrophe that
wipes out major portions of our infrastructure. With the cooperation of
clubs in Hawaii presentations are scheduled on Kauai, Maui, Oahu and the
Big Island.  I could not say enough about the help from clubs that made
this possible.  Thank you to everyone involved!

Here is an overview of his talk.  He has a shorter version that focuses
on the issues faced by the hospitals and medical organizations.

“The presentation discusses the impact hurricane Maria had on Puerto
Rico’s population of 3.2 million. It affected water and electricity
services and caused massive communication interruptions to government
and business infrastructure and reminded us how vulnerable we are to
natural disasters. This first-hand report conveys the enormous issues
faced by first responders in a catastrophe of this scale. Problems faced
by an island community like Puerto Rico can give insight into issues
that may someday have to be faced in Hawaii.

Amateur Radio operators learned how to use their knowledge of radio
technology and resources efficiently to help re-establish critical
infrastructures. In this scale of emergency where government repeater
networks were destroyed, in addition to volunteering for long hours
operating stations, Amateurs were called on to use their technical
skills to create communication solutions.”

Here is a summary of the scheduled talks.
