Before I summarize the top Amateur/Ham Radio news of the week, here are a few reminders for all Hawaii Island radio amateurs:

Thanks to Richard Gardner (WH6LU) for this article.  All Hawaii radio amateurs are invited to an informal breakfast  meeting this Saturday, 04 August 2018, 0800 HST, at the Lava Rock Cafe in Volcano Village.  There will be plenty of good food and great discussions.

The monthly test of the Hawaii State VOAD Mauna Kea Repeater (146.72 MHz–PL 100.0 Hz) will happen this Saturday, 04 August 2018, 1200 to 1300 HST.  All Hawaii radio amateurs are invited to sign in.

The Fifth Annual Hawaiian Islands Grid Madness VHF/UHF Simplex Event will be held on Sunday, 16 September 2018, from 1300 to 1700 HST.  The Aulani Hui Amateur Repeater Club sponsors the annual contenst “to test your equipment, coverage and operating skills using simplex FM on 2 meters and 70 cm.  Contact as many stations as you can in as many Grid Squares as you can, using SIMPLEX ONLY.”  For details, visit

Jim Sugg (AH6AE) needs some radio amateur volunteers “to help demo how ham radio works at (the) upcoming emergency preparedness fair  in Waimea (Hawaii Island)…on Saturday, August 25, 2018 from 8am-12pm…”  The event will be held at the Mana Christian Ohana Hall near the Kahilu Theatre.  For details, call Jim at (808) 747-4500 (mobile).
