Thanks to Oahu ARRL PIO, Darren Holbrook (KH6OWL) for this outstanding article in the “Midweek Magazine.”
This is the type of story that most people will readily understand. Radio amateurs are presented as ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things with communications.
The story presents a brief history of Amateur Radio with ARRL Pacific Section Manager Joe Speroni (AH0A) and then transitions into a discussion of how radio amateurs (“hams”) serve their community and their technical interests. In this well-written article, we learn how Oahu’s Emergency Amateur Radio Club fulfills its public service role and how its members pursue the cutting edge of communications technology. There’s even a quote from Oahu PIO Darren Holbrook (KH6OWL) to wrap up the story.
As the “Midweek” article says, “Oahu is home to a devoted gang of amateur radio operators who work to contact people via the airwaves in all kinds of situations, even in space.”
Reporter Paige Takeya has written a down-to-earth, people-oriented article that illuminates what Amateur Radio is all about–communication and public service.
