Here’s the basic primer for all radio amateurs who want to prepare a “Go Kit” for emergencies or portable operations. Greg’s (WB6FZH) suggestions are particularly applicable to ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service), SATERN (Salvation Army Emergency Radio Network), and community volunteers.
In this article, Greg emphasizes both personal and equipment preparation.
In the personal preparedness area, Greg asks volunteers to be self-sufficient for up to 72 hours. That means planning for adequate water, food, first aid, and medical supplies.
After you take care of your personal requirements, be sure you have your portable station tested before you leave for your emergency assignment. Have backup power supplies, antennas, a spare rig, and a set of tools.
Be sure your station is readily transportable to your assigned area. Be prepared to carry everything with you.
Once the above steps are taken, concentrate on collecting various supplies, including notebooks, pens/pencils, reporting forms, and a list of frequencies allocated for the assignment.
Finally, place the “Go-Kit” in your vehicle so it will be available when the call to action comes.
Greg also has a final reminder for all radio amateurs, whether you are an ARES member or not:
“Consider your own simulation, take your equipment to another location, and set up your station, and see what you do not have… and write it down. Participate in Drills and Simulations if you can, and Join an Emergency Communications Group if you can (RACES, ARES, REACT, MARS ETC).”
The Boy Scouts of America are right–Be Prepared.
